Hey, Kiddo

This book/memoir/comic/graphic novel was absolutely AMAZING. I was teary-eyed throughout this entire book. I was also tearing up hearing Jarrett speak in person at the Brooklyn library. You can also watch his TedTalk online. “Hey, Kiddo” is a definite must read! I loved the letters his mom wrote to him as well. Battling substance abuse Read More…

Maurene Goo

Love Maurene Goo, and all her cute books! I’d have to say that my favorite was “Somewhere Only We Know.” Here’s a notable line from her “The Way You Make Me Feel Book”- “When you saw the city like this, everything inside you slowed down. Relaxed. It wasn’t that LA was perfect, or some immigrant Read More…

Ryan Higa

I’ve been following Ryan Higa for years on YouTube-he has the funniest videos (SO clever). I finally got to meet him at BookCon a couple years ago, which was amazing. I loved reading his book for so many reasons-it really does tell you a lot about how to write first of all (don’t be fooled Read More…

Rupi Kaur

Major love to Rupi Kaur (and Lilly Singh on the left)! I went to see her read her second book, “The Sun and Her Flowers.” I also absolutely loved “Milk and Honey” as well. Such powerful, thoughtful poems, with fantastic illustrations. I can’t wait to read more of her poems!

Patricia Park

I loved being able to see Patricia Park at the MET several years ago, shortly after reading her Korean American take on “Jane Eyre” with her “Re Jane” novel. I also loved her more recent article on The New Yorker, “Taking My Place at my Father’s Grocery Store.” Check it out here:https://www.newyorker.com/culture/personal-history/taking-my-place-at-my-fathers-grocery-store

The top photo was based on a Korean American panel of books hosted by BookCon. Check these amazing YA authors out! Notable lines from Jenny Han’s “To Read More…

Hello, World: New York

The best way to build up your vocabulary and writing skills is to read. Even though the Hello, World books are for younger readers, my son can still benefit from them. Just this page alone is first of all absolutely adorable, but you can say words like “taxis” and “library.” Ok, maybe that’s not a Read More…

Tiny Beautiful Things

I watched an off-Broadway show on Cheryl Strayed’s “Tiny Beautiful Things” and was tearing up by how much the stories moved me. These words pierced and comforted me greatly:“. . . my grief is tremendous but my love is bigger. So is yours. You are not grieving your son’s death because his death was ugly Read More…

Dear Black Boy

I was so fortunate to meet Martellus Bennett last year at an event in NYC. He spoke about his children’s book, “Dear Black Boy,” being like a love letter of encouragement to his younger self, and all the black boys out there who need to be reminded that they can be more than athletes. How Read More…

Skin Care Routine

I loved Charlotte Cho’s “The Little Book of Skin Care.” I especially loved how she grew up in CA (like me) and went abroad to Korea (like me, though I only studied abroad for a couple of months). But that was definitely enough time to fall in love with city life in Seoul, and all Read More…
